This weekend, people around the world will be counting down to 2019.
Although Times Square is probably the most famous place in the world to welcome the New Year, Africa is a great place to be when the clock strikes midnight on December 31.
We’ve had a look at the best NYE 2018/2019 celebrations in Africa from Cape Town to Lagos and Kilifi.
From big parties to chilled garden concerts, Cape Town in South Africa has an NYE event for everyone
Cape Town is the place to be for those who want to party like it’s 2019! There’s an awesome all-white party on Heritage Square and two parties at the Silo District’s Radisson Red.
However, even if ‘going big’ isn’t your thing, and you prefer a chilled celebration, Cape Town has got you covered. You can choose to celebrate the New Year at a chilled concert in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, to a scenic dinner in the winelands at Grade Provence and a five-course feast at one of Cape Town’s beloved restaurants, Sevruga.
Fireworks and all-night parties in Lagos
Lagos has the most amazing nightlife at any time of the year, but on NYE the city goes wild. There are a number of clubs to choose from on Victoria Island with Quilox usually hosting a Moet bottle filled extravaganza with top Nigerian hip-hop artists.
Lagos Countdown is an annual event at the Bar Beach in Lagos. The event lasts for around twenty days and traditionally begins on the 7th or 8th of December and lasts through January 1st of New Year. Festivities for the countdown typically include fireworks, live music concerts and karaoke.
The Jameson Vic Falls Carnival in Victoria Falls
Usher in the New Year like never before and experience the world’s greatest adventures at the 7th Wonder of the World, Victoria Falls.
This 3-day Carnival event consists of a train party, and an NYE extravaganza. The famous train party takes party-goers on a five-hour vintage steam train journey through the Victoria Falls National Park to a secret location deep in the African bush. With Sub-Saharan Africa DJ’s pumping top tunes through the classic carriages, you’ll be in full party mood when you disembark at the secret stage set up under the African skies.
This party is followed the following day with an unparalleled New Year’s Eve extravaganza with over 6,000 revellers, top bands and DJ’s from all over Africa, stilt walkers, fire dancers and the best party atmosphere.
Celebrate in cultural style at Afrochella in Ghana
Afrochella is a festival on the 29th of December in Accra and is designed to highlight and elevate thriving millennial talent within Africa. The festival is an interactive event that encourages collaboration, explains and explores culture with a pioneering approach. Cultural partygoers will enjoy the festival’s art and fashion installations, live painting, African cuisine and live performances.
On NYE, Accra’s Osu Oxford Street will not disappoint. This street has some of the city’s best restaurants, clubs and pubs. On NYE, you can expect a true ‘carnival’ on the street with live music and dancing in the streets.
Have an ‘immersive’ NY experience in Kilifi, Kenya
Kilifi New Year is a boutique house, alternative and reggae music festival with an African twist held in Kilifi town on the coast of Kenya from 30th December 2018 to 2nd January 2019.
The festival is set on 20 acres of pristine lush plateau, home to secret wild orange and lemon orchards, bamboo forests and thousand year-old baobabs in the upper reaches of Takaungu Creek on the Indian Ocean.
A melting pot of global cultures, Kilifi New Year is a haven for freedom of expression. The festival culminates with the burning of a large wooden sculpture symbolising new beginnings and the shared optimism for a brighter future, bringing together the community of Kilifi and festival goers for a moving spectacle.
Onsite features include locally sourced, organic food and drink stalls, fashion, art and craft vendors, workshops and classes promoting conscious and sustainable living, and a Water Park.
Kilifi New Year has something for everyone and is an immersive experience like no other.
Wherever you decide to celebrate, Amadeus wishes you a fantastic 2019!
